Physical Therapy Exercises for Total Knee Replacement

Phase 1 exercises for total knee replacement:

  1. Heel Slides: Lie on your back with your legs straight out in front of you. Slowly slide your heel towards your buttocks, bending your knee as far as you comfortably can. Hold for a few seconds, then slide your heel back to the starting position. Repeat for 10 repetitions.

  2. Quad Sets: Sit with your legs straight out in front of you. Tighten the muscles on the front of your thigh, pressing the back of your knee down towards the floor. Hold for a few seconds, then release. Repeat for 10 repetitions.

  3. Ankle Pumps: Lie on your back with your legs straight out in front of you. Flex your feet up towards your head, then point your toes down towards the floor. Repeat for 10 repetitions.

  4. Knee Extension: Sit with your legs straight out in front of you. Place a rolled-up towel or small pillow under your ankle. Hold this position for 7-10 minutes.

Remember to consult with your physical therapist before starting any exercise program after total knee replacement surgery. They can help you determine the appropriate exercises for your specific needs and abilities, as well as monitor your progress throughout your recovery.
